The Bay Area was originally the center for Spanish missions and Gold Rush prospectors. The city of Fremont came about through the amalgamation of five towns. They combined resources to form Fremont and named the town after John C Fremont who, more than a century earlier, had mapped a trail through Mission Pass to provide access for American settlers into the region.
